Your Small Desk Isn't the Problem.
Search for this problem and you will find people describing the exact same collision in opposite words. Some type “my desk is too low for my chair.” Others type “office chair too high for desk.” A few type “chair too low for desk.” Same armrest, same desk edge, same dead stop, and no agreement about which object is at fault.
That is not carelessness. Your desk is probably not too low, and your chair is probably not too high. Nobody has given you a way to compare them.
The clearance under your desk is described from the floor. The height of your armrest is described from the seat. Two different starting points, and one of them moves every time you touch the cylinder. So the single comparison that would settle this, will my armrest fit under my desk, cannot be made from the numbers you are handed.
You are left guessing. Then blaming whichever object is closer.
There is a way out, and it takes a tape measure and two minutes. The catch is that the obvious number to reach for, the height of the desktop, is not the one that decides whether your chair fits under it.

What do you do when your chair won’t fit under your desk?
Measure from the floor to the lowest point under your desk, not to the underside of the desktop. The two are rarely the same number. On my desk the desktop sits at 31.5 inches, while a drawer box underneath drops the real clearance to 26.0.
Then measure from the floor to the top of your armrest, with the chair set the way you actually sit. Subtract. That difference is your shortfall, and it decides the fix.
If dropping your armrests to their lowest setting closes it, you are done and it cost nothing. If it does not, no adjustment on the chair will, and the desk has to come up instead. My own armrests sit at 28.0 inches even at their lowest setting, so they still fall short by about two inches.
Why Your Armrests Hit the Desk: Is It the Chair or the Desk?
Both framings show up in real accounts, and neither camp is being unreasonable.
On home and hobby forums, people describe it from the chair’s side: armrests that hit the desk, or a run of chairs where every single one hit. Others describe it from the desk’s side, a chair that would not fit without risers underneath, a sit-stand desk that will not travel low enough.
These are individual accounts, not a survey, and I am not going to tell you which framing is more common. What matters is that both exist. When two people looking at the same collision cannot agree on which object to blame, it is worth asking whether they share a reference point at all.
They do not.
Desks are described from the floor. The only clearance figure published with a stated reference point is an accessibility one: ADA section 306.3.1, which protects the knee zone from 9 to 27 inches above the finished floor. That is a wheelchair requirement for public buildings, not a target for the desk in your bedroom. It earns its place here for one reason. It is measured from the floor, the way a fixed object should be.
Chairs are described from the seat. And the seat is the one part of a chair that moves. A cylinder with four inches of travel carries every seat-referenced number with it. So a published armrest height is not a height at all until you know where the seat was.
How to Fix Armrests That Hit Your Desk
You do not have to measure to start. Try the free things first: some of them work, and if one works for you, you never need the tape measure at all. And if none of them works, that failure is the useful result, because it tells you the chair is not what is stopping you.
Free fixes: lower, pivot, or remove the armrests
Lower them. This is the first answer everyone gives, and it is the right first move if your armrests adjust in height. Herman Miller publishes an adjustable arm range of 7.5 to 11.5 inches, so on a chair like that you have about four inches of travel.
Your chair may have less. On my own chair the top of the armrest sits at 30.7 inches from the floor at its highest setting and 28.0 inches at its lowest. That is 2.7 inches of range, not four. Measure yours instead of trusting the catalogue.
Pivot them or pull them in. Many armrests rotate inward or slide laterally. This helps if the obstruction is the desk’s side panel or a drawer pedestal you can get around. It does nothing if your problem is vertical, because turning an armrest sideways does not lower it. Worth thirty seconds to try, and worth knowing why it might change nothing.
Take them off. Sometimes this is four bolts and you are finished. Sometimes it is not reversible, and you should find that out before you start rather than after. One gamer on a forum removed his and got the clearance he wanted. Then he discovered he had been using that armrest to steady his mouse hand.
Add washers under the armrest bracket. This one is less known. Taylor’d Ergonomics, an ergonomics consultancy, describes inserting washers between the armrest bracket and the bottom of the chair, and notes that tools are required. They do not publish how much height it buys, so I am not going to invent a number for it. It is a real option to look into if your armrests are bolted rather than adjustable.
Fixes that trade one problem for another
Lowering the whole chair. If the armrests will not come down, the cylinder will. It gets the armrests under the desk. It also drops your seat, which moves the conflict from your elbows to your knees and your shoulders.
Two independent accounts describe exactly that. One person found their knees and arm angle uncomfortable once they had dropped the chair to clear a desk in the 28 to 29 inch range. Another, on the Australian forum Whirlpool, ended up with their wrists sitting above their elbows.
So this one has a price, and it is not money. If you are already fighting posture at a shallow desk, you are choosing which joint absorbs the problem, and that is the same mechanism behind how to improve posture at a small desk.
Removing armrests that are load-bearing for something else. The same Whirlpool thread contains the case nobody writes about: a chair whose armrests could not come off at all, because the adjustment controls were mounted on them and cables ran through them. “Just take the armrests off” assumes an armrest is a passive piece of plastic. On some chairs it is part of the control surface.
Lowering only one side. One user settled on an asymmetric setup: left armrest dropped so the chair slides under the desktop, right armrest left at working height for the mouse hand. He knows it collides. He does it anyway, and pushes the chair in at an angle. He describes it as a workaround, and it is. But it names the real trade: the height that lets you store the chair is not the height that lets you use it.
When no adjustment works: raising the desk
Here is where this article stops agreeing with the others.
Every fix above acts on the chair. If you have worked through them and the armrest still stops against something, the chair is not the variable deciding this.
I can show you that from my own desk. My armrests adjust, I have taken them all the way down, and they still do not clear. The numbers are in the next section.
So the remaining move is to raise the desk, and that is a different family of product: furniture risers. Which kind you need depends on what your desk stands on.
One I would point you at if the geometry works for you is this four-piece Huakaile riser set. It adds two inches, is rated to 4409 pounds, and clamps on with a screw rather than relying on the leg sitting in a cup. Two things decide whether it is any use to you, and to its credit the listing publishes both.
It fits a leg between 0.8 and 1.6 inches. That is a narrow window, and it rules out more furniture than you would expect. I cannot use it on my own desk. It stands on a flat bar running front to back instead of four separate legs, 2.4 by 17.3 inches, so the clamp has nothing of the right shape to grip. Measure the cross-section of your leg, not the gap between your legs, before you buy anything in this category.
It adds two inches, and only two. If it turns out you are four or five inches short, this is not your answer, and stacking is not something I can promise you. I looked at two sets advertised as stackable and could not establish from either listing what heights they actually ship in, or what leg they fit.
Which is the article’s own point coming back from the product side. The number that decides whether you can use the thing was the one I could not find.
Now the other kind of desk, because a clamp is useless to it.
If your desk sits on a flat bar like mine, nothing that clamps will help. What that shape needs is a riser the foot rests on top of, wide enough that the bar sits fully supported rather than bridging a gap.
I went looking for one and did not find a set I would put my name to. Every riser I opened was built around a recessed cup, a socket the leg drops into, and a long flat bar cannot sit in a socket. The ones with an open or L-shaped top came closer, but not one of those listings says it is meant for a bar base, and I am not going to guess about something holding up a desk.
So do the looking yourself, with three things in hand. Look for an open top rather than a cup. Measure the width and the length of your bar. And treat a listing that will not publish its own top dimensions exactly the way you should treat a chair spec with no reference point.
And the last resort, stated honestly: a chair without armrests. It solves the problem completely. It is also a lot of money to close a gap that might be an inch. I am not linking one, because nobody should buy a chair before knowing the size of that gap.
How to Measure Your Real Under-Desk Clearance
You now have a reason to measure rather than a theory. Every free fix has failed, and the question is no longer “what should I try” but “how far off am I.”
Why chair spec sheets can’t answer “will it fit”
Take the Aeron. Herman Miller’s product page lists Arm Height as 8.5 inches for fixed arms and 7.5 to 11.5 inches for adjustable ones, and nowhere says what those inches are measured from. You can work it out, since 8.5 inches from the floor would put an armrest below the seat. But you had to reason your way there, and the seat height is itself a range.
Here is the part worth calling out rather than shrugging at. A competitor does state it. Steelcase writes that arm height above the seat is adjustable from 7½”H to 11½”H. Same measurement, same industry, and one of them tells you where zero is. So the omission is an omission, not a convention everybody understands. Secretlab goes a third way, publishing Floor to Seatbase at 17.7 to 20.5 inches and then no armrest height to pair with it.
Three manufacturers. Three conventions. Not one figure you can hold against your desk.
What the published numbers actually add up to
You can add the two published ranges together and see where a chair lands. Here is what that gives, using each manufacturer’s own figures.

One caveat, and I would rather hand it to you than bury it. This addition assumes “above the seat” means from the top of the seat pad to the top of the armrest. No manufacturer confirms that in writing, so I could be off by the thickness of a cushion.
Which is the whole point. These are two of the best documented chairs you can buy, and you still cannot get a floor-referenced armrest height out of them.
The two measurements to take yourself
Two measurements. A tape measure. Do not use a spec sheet for either one.
Measurement 1: floor to the lowest point under your desk. Not the underside of the desktop. Get under there and find the lowest thing that projects into the space where your chair goes: a drawer box, a cross brace, a cable tray, a modesty panel, the top of a computer case sitting on the floor. Measure from the floor to the bottom of that.
Measurement 2: floor to the top of your armrest. Chair set the way you actually sit in it, not at its lowest setting. Top surface of the armrest, not the bracket. If your armrests adjust, take the lowest setting too, because that second number tells you whether adjustment is even in play.
Measurement 1 is worded that carefully because the desktop is the easier thing to reach for. Here is what that costs.
At my desk, the underside of the desktop sits at 31.5 inches from the floor. The lowest point underneath sits at 26.0 inches. That is five and a half inches between the number you get by reaching under the edge and the number that actually decides whether your chair fits.
My desk happens to have a drawer unit creating that gap. Yours might have a brace, a cable spine, or nothing at all, in which case your two numbers land close together and this costs you thirty seconds to confirm.
So the rule is not “desks have drawers.” The rule is find the lowest thing under there and measure to that, whatever it turns out to be. A tower parked on the floor counts, and where to put a PC tower with a small desk deals with that one separately.
Now put the two numbers side by side.
The manufacturers’ figures add up to roughly 22 to 34 inches from the floor. My own clearance is 26.0. The published range does not sit above that or below it. It straddles it. So across this chair’s entire adjustment range, the armrest slides under the desktop and stops against the low point, and nothing on the spec sheet would have warned you.
None of the pages I read while researching this deal with that case. They all treat the underside of the desktop as the limit. At my desk, it is not.
Here is what that produced at my own desk, across the chair’s whole range. Heights are as measured; the shortfalls are rounded to the nearest half inch.

Every setting clears the desktop. Not one clears what is under it.
Lowering the armrest moves it 2.7 inches, which sounds like plenty, until you notice that at the very bottom of that travel it is still 2 inches too high. There is nothing left to lower. That is what it looks like when the chair is not the variable, and none of it is visible on a spec sheet.
You have now measured the space below your desktop. The space above it has its own number, and if your screen sits too low once the chair finally slides in, raising a laptop that sits too low is the same exercise pointed upward.
Mistakes That Keep Your Chair From Fitting Under the Desk
- Measuring to the underside of the desktop. It produces a confident number that is wrong by inches, and at my desk it was wrong by five and a half.
- Comparing a spec-sheet armrest height to a floor-measured desk height. They are not in the same reference frame. Adding a seat height first gets you closer, but you are still stacking two ranges and a stated assumption.
- Dropping the seat to clear the desk. It works, and it hands the problem to your knees and shoulders. If your desk is on the low side already, you are choosing which joint absorbs it.
- Unbolting armrests without checking whether it is reversible. Or whether they carry the chair’s controls. Look underneath before the first bolt comes out.
- Buying a height-adjustable desk before measuring the gap. That is a lot of money for a question you have not asked yet. Find out whether you are short by one inch or by five first.
- Buying risers without measuring the leg. Not the gap between the legs, the cross-section of a single leg. The clamp-on set above wants a leg between 0.8 and 1.6 inches, and my own desk fails that test on shape alone.
Stop guessing which one is at fault
Tomorrow morning, before you sit down, put a tape measure on the floor twice. By the time you stand up you will know whether you are fighting a chair or a desk, and you will stop paying to fix the wrong one.
